Infestation with gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants can cause severe economic losses and endanger animal welfare. The development of organic farming systems, the increased public awareness for drug residues in agricultural products and the development of resistant strains of parasites have enforced the search for sustainable alternatives. The aim of this review is to summarise the current scientific knowledge of alternative strategies to prevent and control endo-parasitic diseases in organic sheep and goat farming systems. The conducted literature evaluation has revealed the major potential to be within the field of bioactive forages, phytotherapy, homeopathy and copper-oxide wire particles. Alternative management pattern like... |

Semi-field and field experiments were carried out to evaluate the biological control potential of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) against grubs in hazelnut, chestnut and cherry orchards. Mortality of hazelnut weevils in interred containers treated with 2.2x106 infective juveniles (IJ) m-2 of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora was 75.4%. H. indica caused 65.2% and S. feltiae 43.3% pest mortality, but numbers were not significantly different from the untreated control (33.4%). Mortality of the chestnut weevil was slightly increased in S. carpocapsae (2x106 IJ m-2) treated containers (44.6%) compared to untreated control containers (39.2%), but differences were either not significant. Soil applications against the European cherry fruit fly did not lead to any... |

Over the last century, the intensification of agriculture with high inputs of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers combined with monocrop specialisation has been detrimental to the diversity of genetic resources of crop varieties and livestock breeds, to the wild flora and fauna species and to the diversity of ecosystems. Higher levels of biodiversity can strengthen farming systems and its resilience under changing environmental conditions. This chapter gives an overview of the impact of organic farming on biodiversity. The chapter considers land-use intensity, the impact of organic farming on biodiversity, biodiversity at different spatial scales and the impact of organic farming on selected functional groups. Finally, the chapter discusses some examples... |

"Biological agriculture" is a synonym for organic farming, but the term was developed independently from ‘biological control’. Therefore, it cannot be taken for granted that all methods of biological control are acceptable or even a first choice in organic farming. In this chapter, we explore the attitude of organic farming towards methods of biological control. Although organic farming has become popular during the last decade, organic farms are still a minority in all countries. Furthermore there is a lack of profound knowledge about the regulatory framework for organic farming (i.e. public regulations and private standards). Therefore, we will firstly give a brief introduction to organic farming. |

With its high contents of starch, buckwheat grain can be a valuable source of carbohydrates in diets for any kind of livestock and poultry. Although the crude protein concentrations are limited, its amino acid profile is advantageous due to the high intrinsic proportions of lysine and methionine. In many regions with temperate climate conditions it is possible to cultivate buckwheat as a catch crop, e.g. after the harvest of barley, in the same season. This makes the crop a second harvest from a given arable land within the same year. If it is used to feed livestock, it contributes to decrease the feed-food competition about arable surfaces in a world with dramatically growing food demands. As a flowering crop, buckwheat positively contributes to the... |

Migration from the Bolivian Altiplano to the Amazonian lowlands poses a number of challenges related to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Alto Beni, located in the Bolivian Yungas at the interface between two altitudinal zones, is a critical area in this respect. Unsustainable land use practices are leading to soil erosion, shallow landslides, as well as forest and biodiversity loss. Settlers from the Altiplano see themselves confronted with an ecosystem that does not support the agricultural systems they were once used to. Soil degradation and government incentives have promoted migration further into the rainforest, creating pressure on local indigenous groups and biodiversity. The best-suited land use system for the fragile soils... |

In a long-term field trial in which organic and conventional agricultural systems were compared since 1978 we analyzed soil microbial biomass, microbial activity and substrate utilization patterns by the Biolog GN microplates. Microbial biomass and the Cmic -to-Corg ratio was distinctly higher in organic plots whilst the metabolic quotient qCO2 as an indicator of the energy requirement of soil microorganisms was lower. Substrate utilization profiles were affected by the different lon-term treatments, but also indicated differences of short-term effects like crop and soil management steps. |
